John Joseph Murphy (August 1, 1872 - May 9, 1957) was an Irish agricultural entrepreneur who established India's first commercially viable rubber plantation in Kerala.
Early life and career
editBorn in Ireland in 1872, Murphy attended Trinity College Dublin but left without completing his degree.[1] He migrated to British Ceylon before settling in Kerala's High Range region in 1902.[2]

editIn 1902, Murphy established a 1,200-acre rubber plantation in Yendayar, near Mundakayam.[3] This became India's first successful commercial rubber plantation, producing 50 tons annually by 1910.[4]
Philanthropy
editMurphy supported several Catholic institutions including:
- St. Joseph's Seminary in Mundakayam (1912)[5]
- J.J. Murphy Memorial High School (originally a convent school)[6]
He received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice papal honor in 1925.[7]
Death and legacy
editMurphy died at his Yendayar estate in 1957. His legacy includes:
- The establishment of Kerala's rubber industry, which today produces over 90% of India's natural rubber[8]
- The Rubber Board of India's John Joseph Murphy Research Centre
- Founded the John Joseph Murphy Memorial Higher Secondary School
- A memorial plaque at his former residence, now the Nature Sanctuary Urumbi Hills Hotel[9]
His original plantation buildings are preserved as part of Kerala's agricultural heritage.
